When I was a kid, I used to love to lay on my back and watch clouds. It wasn’t actually the clouds I was interested in. Sure, whether they were cirrus, cumulus or some other type of cloud was all interesting(ish), but that’s not what engaged me.

I loved finding hidden figures and objects in the shapes of the clouds. A dog, Mickey mouse’s head, an arrow – the more creative you are, the more you find.

When I create abstract panels, I look for shapes emerging the same way I looked to the sky when I was a kid. I do my best to not become attached to them and let the work evolve. As I worked on this mixed media glass piece, two figures arose that I just could not cover. For a time, I toyed with enhancing them to make them more apparent. But in the end, I decided to leave them vague.

The piece is named Verklempt, which means overcome with emotion. The name is for the figures and objects I can see in the piece.

Each panel is 48″ tall by 20″ wide. The diptych is created from mixed media and reclaimed glass mounted on wood panels and hung with french cleats.

An experiment in techniques, this wall installation is mixed media and glass, mounted to a wood substrate and hangs via a french cleat system. Creating the piece involved many many layers of mixed media, metallics and glass. It is large and striking with glints of metallic that sparkle and change as the viewer moves about the room.

Prairie Sunset Measures 49″ wide and 37″ tall and is sold.

New work: Point Lobos

On the California Coast near Carmel, there is a point at which you can look down the cliff and see crashing white water on all sides. This piece is made for that place. It is created from mixed media upon a wood substrate for easy transport and is rigged with a french cleat for easy hanging. 24″ Diameter.

Brilliant Red Triptych

This brilliant red triptych is a pop of color for the wall. The set was created with kiln-fired glass, pigments, variegated metals, all mounted in a cradle and framed in black. It’s impactful at 52″ wide by 20″ tall, yet also zen with flowing texture that provides layers and layers of depth and interest.

Mounted glass is an excellent choice for public spaces where the beauty of glass is desired, but the fragility is a concern. This set arrives framed, wired, and ready to hang.

New Series: Mendings

First in a new series of work called “Mendings,” is “Once Shattered.”

Kintsugi (金継ぎ^?) (Japanese: golden joinery) or Kintsukuroi (金繕い^?) (Japanese: golden repair) is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

“Once Shattered” is a metaphor for the human condition. Once healed, our broken spots are what make us unique. They should be regarded as part of our history, rather than something to disguise.

“Once Shattered” is formed from broken reclaimed glass that has been fully fused and returned to one piece of glass. It is colorized with pigments, variegated copper foil and silver toned foil. The back is coated in iron with rust. The base is created from wood, iron, copper and rust.

Overall, the piece measures 24″ tall, by 8″ wide by 6″ deep.
